October 7, Edited by xbradley This work is similar in tone and enjoyability, assuming you enjoy Swift and Pope. I'd put this in between the two, with Gulliver's Travels being the best. Recommended, though read Swift first if you haven't yet don't accept the truncated and bowdlerized children's versions, written or animated. Who liked classics after all, with their ramblings and outdated words and references? I thought I would hate Candide, fall asleep while reading it, mark it as DNF… but to my great pleasure, I quite enjoyed it.

It was definitely readable, and I think its philosophies still apply to this day. It was interesting to approach this from the other perspective. Some may see us as fools for finding joy in the wrecks that is our lives, for being grateful when it seems like we have nothing to be grateful for. Also, Voltaire seems so woke for his day and age, and I was astonished to see elements of feminism show throughout this novel, written almost years ago by a white man. I only read Candide. Candide is a gritty, unpolished look at the brokenness of the world through the eyes of an 18th century skeptic. It was written primarily in reaction and response to the optimism of Leibniz which posited that due to God's sovereignty, we are in the best possible worlds no matter how bad things are.

Voltaire soundly challenges that with this disturbing, satirical unveiling of the horrors humans are capable of and posits that the answer is not in rationalizing everything but rather in simply doing what we can in our small sphere of influence.

I don't recommend this for young or delicate readers as it is quite graphic and violent. I read at least Candide and Zadig for a 2 semester History of Europe survey course. I recall preferring Zadig to Candide, but the overall impression about Candide improved after the lecture. As with many originals the repetition of the style of satire may make reading this now less enjoyable than if I were able to read it with a blank slate on the subject.

Witty, insightful, sarcastic and pretty timeless in its ideas, Voltaire is definitely fun to read. I see that other reviews have covered the ideological layer quite well, I will argue, though, that the stories could definitely be entertaining even if you're not a full-time philosophy student. We really don't need more words in the ether to praise Voltaire, especially his eviscerating work in Candide, but I'll add a few more anyways. Many many years later, it still burns buns in the seat real nice.

Recommended for those who give up on a diet weekly. Jan 22, Bethany rated it it was amazing. Entertaining, witty, and clever. Wit coupled with philosophy. People use the word bitch, to call other people by it. Every book is written for different purpose. Every single writer wrote their books so that several readers can relate to them or to persuade them.

I, honestly, am against books that influence people to get involve with drugs or books that are about sex and racism.

I think they should be banned from middle school and should be limited for certain ages at the libraries and bookstores. I researched the book called Candide by Voltaire, was basically about Catholic priests and what they do outside the church. Things such as, getting girls pregnant, which they are not suppose to do. My opinion was really for and against banned books, but for different reasons. If somebody would like to gain respect, they should also give respect.

It's filled with the same thought-provoking writing and satire that people have come to recognize. Zadig reads like a mixture of a fairy tale, fable, folklore, fantasy, Shakespearian, Narnia, This review is only for the novella ZADIG in this collection.

Zadig reads like a mixture of a fairy tale, fable, folklore, fantasy, Shakespearian, Narnia, and French slapstick theatre all rolled into one. While it might be predictable, the situations are nothing short of fun and fast-paced.

It's all about a man who thinks that just being nice and doing good will make life easy, but he finds that's not the case, and for every good deed there is a punishment. The question put forth is "Why do bad things happen to good people? One of the most powerful lines in the book, for me, was when an angel, who had been disguised as a hermit tells Zadig that people judge everything, without understanding anything.

And that nothing is an accident in this world. Everything is either a gift or a punishment. I don't know if I truly believe that one, but it sounds philosophical enough to make one ponder over such a phrase. Anyway, I loved reading it. It's very short, around pages and it keeps going and there wasn't one spot in it where I was wondering how many more pages do I have left, which I often do when reading.

If you're a fan of any of the genres I mentioned above, or have read CANDIDE and are looking for something fun, quick, yet thought-provoking, I'd definitely urge you to check out this novella. This is the kind of writing that makes me want to write. Timeless literature like this is the best kind of literature. Voltaire's writing is very different from anything today, but still worth reading. Purely as fiction, I suppose it has its weaknesses, but it's clear that Voltaire was writing philosophy first, fiction second. For that reason, if it were read without keeping in mind that it's unlike the fiction we're used to today, I can understand why it would be difficult to read. The ups-and-downs and bizarre characters of Candide's story make it entertaining as well as thought-provoking, depending on your se Voltaire's writing is very different from anything today, but still worth reading.

The ups-and-downs and bizarre characters of Candide's story make it entertaining as well as thought-provoking, depending on your sense of humor. It actually reminds me of Terry Gilliam's film The Adventures of Baron Munchausen , leading me to wonder to what extent, if any, that movie or any other Monty Python work is inspired by Candide.

As for the other stories in this edition, the same generally applies, but some of them do feel a little bit too didactic to be completely interesting. I did really enjoy Zadig , too, though. Voltaire is my favorite author, and I come back to him over and over with delight, particularly when the world annoys or oppresses me. We can all benefit from his teachings.

Are you brooding and philosophizing? Then get busy "cultivate our garden," as Candide says. Are you disgusted with the world's hypocrisies, and feel as if the planet should be smashed? Resolve to leave the world as it is, for even "if all is not well, all is passable.

Like that other great satirist, Jonathan Swift, Voltaire understood that humor is a tremendous weapon, one that can expose life's absurdities in a trice. Candide and L'Ingenu always have me laughing out loud. Voltaire's dead-pan delivery is the key, and he also understood that brevity is the soul of wit. All of the works collected here are brief and easily read in an evening.

If you haven't read the great philosophe, you are missing out on one of literature's finest gifts. View all 5 comments. Aug 02, Pete rated it really liked it.

And of course, the moral of the story is that for every million grains of sands that are crushed on the beach, one becomes a diamond. Highly recommend this one for its humor and satire that is still true even though it was written by a French Philosoph in the 18th century. Again, filled with satire, much of which isn't relevant know. It's still entertaining, but not as good as Zadig. Apr 02, Greg Tomasulo rated it it was amazing.

This book is the Enlightenment's version of a Steve Martin movie, except the book is a intelligent and b actually funny. It is one of the very few books that I've read several times, and it makes me laugh out loud each time. It satirically criticizes the organization of religion, politics, and social structure of the times, although most of the criticisms are sadly still relevant today. Zadig is also a good story with a very similar tone, and both are less than pages each so they are quick reads. I've not bothered to read any of the other stories in this book. It is rare that you get an intelect in this range. And that this intellect is an artistic intelect rather than a scientific or matematical one is made even more surprising by the rationality of the author.

In an age of chaos he gave voice to truth even when possibly at the expense of his life. Voltaire is an excellent satirist, and the footnotes in my copy of the book point out many parallels between the characters in Zadig's Babylon and Voltaire's contemporary French court. While my knowledge of Enlightenment history is pretty vague, I still found Voltaire's jabs at his rivals to be entertaining and his pokes at bureaucracy to be timeless.

While this story is somewhat of a philosophical and political fable which makes it sound kind of dry , it is also very very funny, insightful, and a quick and satisfying read. The same can be said for the selected short stories also included in this volume.
